Community Outreach Internship Program

UCSF Human Resources and Community & Governmental Relations Departments have developed a Community Outreach Internship Program to work in collaboration with surrounding community agencies.  The program has a dual purpose: to access and develop the potential work force in UCSF’s surrounding communities and to provide the communities with access to employment with the University. Our purpose for this internship program is to provide the interns with actual work experience at the University and to familiarize them with the complexities of the work environment, performance standards, attendance requirements, changing technology that may potentially lead to full-time employment with the University or in the private sector.

The internship program will be coordinated through the Temporary Employment Program (TEP), due to the TEP’s expertise in skills assessment and evaluation, flexibility, access to payroll/billing processes, and campus-wide recognition. It also has the most expedient access to available job opportunities at the University.

The Interns are High School graduates or have their GED. Some of the interns have previous work experience. They have been recruited from various community training programs and agencies by Florence Crittenton Services (our community representative and partner). Requisite training if needed will consist of computer software programs, customer service, and basic clerical skills such as filing, telephones & office etiquette, and operation of various office equipment provided by Florence Crittenton.

There are two internship periods during the year, Winter/Spring and Summer/Fall.

Each internship period is five (5) months in length. These are training positions so all interns must have one supervisor in the department as their direct contact for the entire internship period. The Supervisor will have assistance from the program job coach and the interns mentor.

The interns are classified as clerk-trainees.  They are paid an hourly wage in accordance with the UCSF Title & Pay Plan.  The program has been subsidized by a grant from the Department of Human Services (DHS) through the Private Industry Council (PIC), Temporary Employment Program (TEP) and UCSF Departments. The TEP also pas for sick leave (when accrued) and holidays when applicable.

An advisory Committee has been formed consisting of members representing UCSF (TEP, UC Departments, Community & Government Relations) and community organizations (Florence Crittenton).

If you would like more information about our program, contact the TEP Office at (415) 476-4486 or Community & Government Relations at 514-2651.
